Why It’s Harder For Women to Lose Weight
It has been my experience that, in general, women are at a distinct disadvantage when compared to men when it comes to obesity and their ability to lose weight.
There are a couple of reasons that can help explain this phenomenon.
First, women generally have smaller body sizes, and, as a result, their energy expenditures have been shown to be less than that of men performing the same activities.
For example, according the American College of Sports Medicine, an 85-kg male running 10 kilometers in 45 minutes would expend 917 calories. However, A 55-kg female running the same distance in the same time would expend only 593 calories!
The lower energy output is primarily due to the fact that women have a smaller body mass than men.
Women are also at a disadvantage because they tend to have less fat-free mass than men. Since fat-free mass (or muscle mass) is responsible for fueling our metabolism, the average daily metabolic rates (ADMR) for women will therefore be less than that of men of the same ages and body sizes.
The average basal metabolic rate (BMR) for men is considered to be 38 kcal/m2/h while it is only 35 kcal/m2/h for women. BMR is the minimum number of calories your body needs to sustain life in a resting state.
It can be looked at as being the amount of energy (measured in calories) expended by the body to remain in bed asleep all day! Amazingly, your BMR can be responsible for burning up to 70% of your total calories on a daily basis, but this figure varies due to different factors such as lean body mass, gender, age, genetics, and your activity level.
Your BMR is the largest factor in determining overall metabolic rate and how many calories you need to maintain, lose or gain weight.
According to exercise physiologists William McArdle and Frank Katch, the average maintenance level (BMR) for women in the United States is 2000-2100 calories per day and the average for men is 2700-2900 calories per day.
Since men have a higher BMR than women, therefore, they will in turn have a higher ADMR (average daily metabolic rate). The fact that women are in many cases smaller than men and that their ADMRs tend to be lower than that of men makes the weight loss process more difficult for women than for men.
The differences between men and women such as increased muscle mass and BMR are mainly hormonally caused. Prior to puberty, men and women are physiologically similar; it is the presence of either testosterone or estrogen that leads to physiological changes. Increased testosterone leads to an increase in muscle mass whereas estrogen leads to an increase in fat deposits. With exercise, women increase their levels of testosterone, thereby increasing their muscle mass and BMR.
Here’s a simple formula you can use to figure out your basal metabolic rate. It’s known as “Katch-McArdle formula” and it’s a helpful tool because it calculates BMR based on lean body weight (it’s more accurate than other formulas that simply look at body weight).
If you have had your body composition tested and you know your lean body mass, then you can get the most accurate BMR estimate of all. This formula takes into account lean mass and therefore is more accurate than a formula based on total body weight. Since this formula accounts for lean body mass (LBM), this single formula applies equally to both men and women.
BMR (men and women) = 370 + (21.6 X lean mass in kg)
Example:
You are female
You weigh 120 lbs. (54.5 kg)
Your body fat percentage is 20% (24 lbs. fat, 96 lbs. lean)
Your lean mass is 96 lbs. (43.6 kg)
Your BMR = 370 + (21.6 X 43.6) = 1312 calories
Now that you know your BMR would you like to know how many calories you’re “actually” burning on a daily basis? This is referred to as your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE).
To determine your TDEE from BMR, you simply multiply your BMR by the following activity multiplier that most suits you:
Activity Multiplier
Sedentary = BMR X 1.2 (little or no exercise, desk job)
Lightly active = BMR X 1.375 (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/wk)
Mod. active = BMR X 1.55 (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/wk)
Very active = BMR X 1.725 (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days/wk)
Extr. active = BMR X 1.9 (hard daily exercise/sports & physical job or 2X day training, i.e marathon, contest etc.)
Example:
Your BMR is 1312
Your activity level is moderately active (work out 3-4 times per week)
Your activity factor is 1.55
Your TDEE = 1.55 X 1312 = 2033 calories
It has to be said that I’m not huge fan of counting calories so if you want to lose weight without tediously counting calories then here are few things you can do to increase your basal metabolic rate to allow your body to burn more fat even while you’re asleep!
1.Resistance train – a minimum of 3 times per week is recommended. Use your body weight or dumbbells but make sure it gets done.
2.Interval cardio train – studies have shown that high-intensity cardio can raise your metabolic rate for up to 24 hours post-exercise. Interval training allows you to work at a greater intensity while saving you tremendous amounts of time versus low-intensity, long, boring cardio.
3.Drink 2-3 cups of green tea each day – green tea has been shown to increase BMR by increasing your body’s temperature. It is a safe thermogenic aid that also contains tremendous amounts of antioxidants.
4.Eat more raw foods – raw living foods are rich in enzymes. These enzymes are essential for every single metabolic reaction in your body. The more enzymes you can acquire from food, the less stress you impose on your digestive system, the more energy you’ll feel, and the more you increase your metabolic fat-burning engine!

Proper digestion is very important to every living creature on this planet. The first step in ensuring that have a proper digestion function is to assess the quality of the food that you eat:
a) What nutrients does your food contain, and
b) Have you sufficient of the proper enzymes needed to break it down so that these nutrients can be extracted?
Nourishing meals are just as easy to find and eat as junk foods, and it is just as easy to a breakfast containing a high protein and fat content as it is to eat a chocolate biscuit. A hard boiled egg with whole meal toast and yoghurt isn’t difficult to prepare for breakfast, and some tuna, or cheese and whole meal crackers make a nutritious lunch. These foods are easier to digest than the greasy high-fat foods that most people eat at lunchtime.
Proper digestion requires relaxation, and eating when stressed or in a hurry creates the wrong pH conditions in your stomach, with hydrochloric acid production being suppressed and the production enzymes by the liver inhibited. Enzymes are essential to your health, and are types of protein that enable most biochemical reactions to take place. Without the proper production of enzymes, your food will pass through your body largely unchanged, and this indigestion can not only give you stomach pains but also weaken you because the nutritional value of your food is not being realized.
You should take the time to eat, and not try to eat on the job: that is why so many high fliers end up with ulcers. Take time to chew, and mix your food with saliva which itself contains the enzymes amylase and lysozyme. Amylase breaks down starch into sugars, while lysozyme inhibits the growth of oral bacteria. The digestive system therefore begins in the mouth when you chew your food. The breakdown of food into smaller particles also produces more surface area from which the nutrients can be absorbed.
Enzymes are very important to proper digestion, and your diet should include enzyme-rich food such as tropical fruits (pineapple and bananas), honey, and many vegetables. Yoghurt and lacto-fermented foods are also rich in enzymes, and many cooked foods also contain enzymes. An enzyme supplement can also be taken to top-up what you eat, and make up for any enzyme deficiency in your diet. Processed foods are fairly empty of good nutritional value, particularly enzymes, which is why so many people are so overweight: their food is a nutritional desert and their body keeps craving for food that leads to eating binges.
For your food to be properly digested your stomach acid has to be at a certain pH. If you drink too much liquid when eating then the acid will be diluted, and you will not properly digest your food. A glass of water is fine but two or three pints of beer, or a gallon of fruit juice, will dilute the hydrochloric acid concentration in your stomach, and it will not be able to break down your food. Consequently, your digestive system loses much of the nutritional content of what you eat. Restrict heavy drinking of liquid to about two hours before and two hours after eating each meal for maximum efficiency. Many people find that they have to take not only vitamin and mineral supplements to replace those which are lost through inefficient digestion, but also other supplements such as enzymes and extra proteins.
When food is processed or cooked, the process destroys enzymes. Since the body stores only a limited supply of enzymes, eating well cooked or highly processed foods continuously, places great strains on the enzyme reserves, and ultimately the metabolic enzyme reserves have to be used in order to digest your food. This diverts them from their proper purpose, and many of the functions of your body are disrupted.
For example, your lose energy and your immune systems begins to weaken, making you feel tired and more susceptible to illness and disease. You should therefore try to eat foods rich in enzymes, or use an enzyme supplement. Natural raw foods are an excellent addition to your diet, and salads and fruit should be regular components of your meals. Obviously you must eat some cooked foods, but that does not mean that you should avoid eating fresh raw fruits and vegetables altogether. That is a recipe for a dietary disaster.
Enzymes are extremely important components of your digestive system, as is dietary fiber. In fact if you eat a diet containing dietary fiber, some raw fruit and vegetables, and protein, either cooked or uncooked, you will be giving your digestive system a boost. If you are unable to maintain that, then enzyme supplementation, together with general multi-vitamin and mineral supplement daily, should help you to maintain a healthy digestive system. However, fiber is essential since without it you will become constipated, especially if you consume a lot of pulpy foods that mainly consist of water.
It is extremely important that you have proper digestion of the food that you eat, and that your body makes the best use of the nutrients that it contains. To achieve this, you have to maintain the correct pH of stomach acid, and eat foods with the nutritional content required by the human body. This means not overcooking a balanced diet containing protein, fiber, enzymes and other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (plant-based chemicals).

Having worked with 1000s of individuals whose goals have been centered around weight loss (and specifically fat loss) I’ve noticed certain predispositions that make losing weight more difficult for some people than others.
Losing Baby Fat
Unfortunately, nowadays childhood obesity is a “big” problem. Kids are, in general, less active due to the amount of time spent watching TV, playing video games, and a decreased level of physical education in most schools.
This problem is furthered by poor eating habits fostered by advertisements that promote high-sugar “addictive foods”, lack of proper nutrition education in most households, and several other factors.
All of this predisposes our youth to become fatter and more lethargic. The concern here is that at a young age the body grows more fat cells until the beginning of puberty. This sets up the affected child for a long and tiring struggle with their weight for the rest of their life.
Since our body actually grows more fat cells at a young age (if fed a lot of dietary fats, sugars, and calories), it only follows that this critical period of time must promote proper nutrition education and dietary habits as well as an active lifestyle.
If an individual has more fat cells he/she will have a greater tendency to easily gain weight as they grow older. Similarly, it will also be harder for such a person to lose weight and keep it off.
Once we’ve passed puberty we are pretty much set with a finite number of fat cells - much as we are with muscle cells.
Therefore, any weight loss/fat loss efforts cannot be directed towards losing actual fat cells but instead “shrinking” their size. It’s almost like taking the air out of a balloon. Unfortunately, the more balloons (fat cells) there are in the body, the more work it takes to deflate them.
That’s one of the reasons why people who were overweight as children may find it tough to keep a healthy weight as they grow older. Naturally skinny people, on the other hand, have fewer fat cells and thus don’t have to work as hard to maintain a leaner body.
I’m sure you know such people! Those who can eat whatever they want and never put on an ounce of body fat.
Here’s the Good News
The good news is that if you find it naturally harder to lose weight you will be forced to live a healthy lifestyle with a good focus on healthy nutrition and regular exercise - this is a great thing! Although some people may disagree, I believe you have to work with what you’ve got and turn your “weaknesses” into your “strengths”.
Naturally skinny don’t necessarily have the same “need” to worry about their weight and as such tend not to focus too much on what they eat and drink or whether or not they’re very active. As such, my experience with such people has shown that they predispose themselves for an unhealthy future.
Even if they’re not packing on the pounds, they are definitely not doing their internal body any good by eating “garbage” foods and not exercising.
Now obviously not everyone who is thin is unhealthy but I’m simply highlighting the tendency. Overweight individuals “generally” have a greater motivation to exercise and eat well in order to lose weight, which, in turn fosters better overall health.

Bingo 101: Getting to Know the Basics of the Game
Bingo is a game. More specifically it is a game of chance. In playing bingo, numbers are drawn and called out and you need to match the numbers called to your bingo card. Bingo cards are numbers in grids. There are 5 columns; each column represents one letter in the name ‘B-I-N-G-O’. The first person in the game to have his numbers blacked out which is consistent with the provided pattern has to yell ‘BINGO!’ in order to be the winner. The winning card will be verified by the organizers. If it is a legitimate win, then the winner is entitled to the prizes (if it’s a real gambling game). If it’s not then the winner can have bragging rights.
Objective of the game
The main objective of the game is to complete the pattern set in a certain game in the shortest time possible, before anyone else beats you to it. Before the bingo game, the host will lay out the pattern for the said game. Popular patterns can be horizontal, vertical, x-style, box or a black out, in which you need to have all numbers in your card called out.

The 3 Best Ways to Eat Quinoa

So what are the best ways to cook, prepare and serve quinoa?
I should first say that you can do much more than I have outlined here. You can put quinoa in baking, soups, desserts, and breakfast porridge recipes. What I am outlining here are the very best ways to include quinoa in your diet.
Simple meal accompaniment
The first way is to substitute quinoa for the main carbohydrate such as rice or cous cous. You can serve it as a base for curries. It can also be a side dish when serving meat or fish. You can serve it alone or add other vegetables to it to add interest. It has a flavour of its own so it may be an acquired taste as most people will be expecting it to taste like rice. You can even simply toss it with your favourite hebs or spices and eat it alone.
The preparation only takes 10 -15 minutes using 2 part water to one part quinoa. You bring it to the boil and then simmer for 10 - 15 minutes until all the water has been absorbed. Cook it quickly for only 10 minutes if you prefer a slightly crunchy texture. If you like a bit of colour to your meal there is red quinoa which is the same as normal quinoa but in a dark black/maroon colour. I think that it has a slightly stronger flavour and has a harder “shell”.
Quinoa salad
After you have prepared your quinoa using the method described above you can cool it for 20 minutes and add any number of varieties of chopped vegetables to it. This is my favourite way of eating quinoa. You again use the prepared quinoa but this time add it to a stir fry dish of your choice. I find it blends well with peppers, mushrooms, onions, celery and tomatoes. For flavouring I use fresh basil leaves or medium chilli. You just stir fry all the vegetables in olive oil and add the quonoa at the last moment add stir fry for a few minutes more.
